Great Ludlow Shops
The top Ludlow shops
The French Pantry
This is a real treasure trove of imported French specialities. Cassoulet, Rillettes, Bouillabaisse, Confits de Canard and wines. Some of it is own label. Simon goes to France a couple of times a month and does the shopping for the little shop on Tower Street so we've given him a couple of special order requests for his next trip across the channel. Try the acidulated samphire - different and delicious. Nice video of one of his France visits on the French Pantry website
Abundant Shop
New in Ludlow - down by Tescos and Aldi and well worth the walk. Alternatively park in one of the supermarkets and buy a packet of crisps. Abundant is an eclectic selection of furniture, objets, flower design and generally a depot of good taste - carefully brought together by Phil and Ott. Abundant also have bespoke New England kitchen joinery, a great gallery space upstairs and chic event-management. Abundant Shop Website
As You Like It
Next to Rickards ironmongers in the Bull Ring (top of Corve Street) - great wicker baskets and they make soaps which look like little cakes. Great presents.
Little Paws
Teddy Bears – Gollies - Miniatures – it's right on the market square – worth a look! You'll be right by it so go in and look round Little Bears Website
Rickard Hardware and Ironmongers
A hardware store at the corner of the Bull Ring and Corve street – this is a time warp of an old fashioned 'are you being served?' hardware shop - I'm not sure if they still wear brown coats but you get the idea. (actually I think they DO wear them)
Why do we like it? You can still buy 7 screws and nails of different sizes and pay 30p for them – this is a million miles from BQ or Homebase and there are some nice AGA bits and pieces and other stuff here too. No website (as far as I know)
FJ Bodenhams
Photogenic clothes shop by the buttercross on the way to the market - looks like it might just fall down but 600 years later it's still there. Why do I like it? It's a traditional independent gents outfitter with much tweedy stuff as well as more modern wearing apparel – well worth a look around. No website that I can find - but read about them HERE
Prices Bakery
Right up on the market square. Why do we like it? The crusty cobs are fantastic and they have nice sausage rolls - and the only diet Vimto I've found in Ludlow (lunching on the cheap? Get a Prices filled cob and sit by the castle 50 yards away) Prices is my favourite baker in Ludlow (followed by Swifts) Prices Website and Swifts Website
Famers Greengrocers
Just round the corner from the market square - next to the Assembly Rooms in Mill Street. You'll find the best selection of fruit and veg in Ludlow. It looks like an eastern European shop from the outside - and on the inside - but it's the only place in the UK I've ever been able to buy fresh Salsifies - What's a salsify?
Ludlow Cookshop
Why do we like it? Well, we like cookshops and the shop is in the wrong place really so it needs a hand with promotion – why not go and have a look round one of Ludlow’s most overcrowded shops. There's every kind of kitchen thingy here and I defy you to get out without finding something you absolutely MUST have. It's in Pepper Lane (parallel to the single lane street off Bullring) and they have boards pointing you toward the shop. www.ludlowcookshop.co.uk
Kaboodle
Gifts and stuff – half way down Corve street on the right. Why do we like it? They have odd things at a good price and criminally terrible ambient music – and they're our nearest neighbour in Corve Street. You need to walk down Corve Street a couple of hundred yards. You can manage that though - can't you? VERY slow loading website is here
Ludlow Food Centre
Worth a visit on your way in or out of town - see Off The Beaten Track for details.
Also good ...
These places are also good but don't make it into my 'must visit' list because they are already very well positioned and frequented and you will most likely come across them during your visit.
Silver Pear, Deli on the Square, Emporos, The Broad Bean, Chocolate Gourmet, Antique/Period-house shops (walk down Corve Street - they're on the right).
